Grand Marais is a bustling little town in northern Minnesota located on the shores of Lake Superior. While out enjoying the scenery, we noticed a small grass worn path. We followed the path through a grove of trees, over a little wooden bridge and came out on the shores of this rocky beach. I knew immediately that I’d be back the next morning to photography Chloe in the early light.
The next morning we arrived at blue hour. Many people know about golden hour, the moments just before the sun rises or sets. But blue happens earlier, just as the sun is just beginning to show itself. It’s a magical time to be outdoors as the world is softly enveloped in pastels and stillness.
Chloe was a patient subject. I spent a good hour photographing her on the rocks from a variety of angles and distances. I’m always surprised at her dexterity on rocky surfaces. She’s seems to feel very at home.
